There are about 200 Orthodox churches and chapels in the Sofia Diocese, over 40 monasteries, built from the 4th century to the present day. The largest and most important church in Sofia and throughout Bulgaria is the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. The Sofia Synagogue is remarkable, one of the largest and most exquisite in all of Europe. An important monument and a functioning prayer house is the Sofia mosque "Banya Bashi", which once combined a hammam (bath) from the hot mineral spring in the city center.
