This temple has a significant contribution related to the struggle for an independent Bulgarian church. During the Christmas service in 1859 here for the first time was served a holy liturgy in a Bulgarian language thanks to the local bishop Paisii and the priest Zlatan. After the service, the bishop declared that he was no longer going to be subjected to the Patriarchy in Istanbul.
