The old monastery church was from stone so it survived the big fire. However, it was decided that a bigger and more spectacular new one should be built in order to accommodate the increased number of believers who were visiting the monastery. Since there was not enough space in the yard for two churches, the old one was destroyed and the current one was built in its place.
