The initial Rila Monastery was established in the middle of the 10th century by the disciples of Saint Ioan near his cave. It was a simple wooden construction but gradually it became one of the most important spiritual centers for the Bulgarians. At the beginning of the 14th century, the number of monks has increased significantly so they needed a bigger space and this is how the location of the monastery changed to its current one.
