The mosque was built by the renowned Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan (1490-1588). Banya Bashi is one of the few surviving of 25 mosques in Sofia from the end of the 19th century; it was built on the initiative and with the funds of Mulla Kad Seyfullah Efendi and therefore it was named after him.
