The monument was erected as a commemoration of the hundreds of thousands of soldiers, who died for their homeland in the wars, led by the Bulgarian country. The project is the work of the architect Nikola Nikolov and it was opened on 22 September 1981, on the occasion of the 1300th anniversary of Danube Bulgaria.
