Site type: Historical / Monument
Period of construction: 1901
The idea for the construction of the monument dates back to 1892, during the Second Congress of the opposition corps. A committee was set up to help raise the necessary funds for the construction, with Stoyan Zaimov appointed as a chairman. In February 1900 an international competition was held, and the jury selected Florentine Arnaldo Zocchi as a winner among 90 candidates. The main stone of the monument was laid on 23 April 1901, and the official opening took place on 30 August 1907 in the presence of Liberation war veterans. The Monument to the Tsar Liberator was erected in honour of the Liberation of Bulgaria and pays tribute to the king - the Russian Emperor Alexander II Nikolaevich, who led the Liberation War of 1877/1878.
